Conditional Sentences



A conditional sentence typically consists of an if-clause (which presents a condition) and a result clause (main clause). For instance: ‘She will come to your party tonight if her mother lets her go.’ ‘She will come to your party tonight’ is a result clause while ‘if her mother lets her go’ is if-clause that presents a condition.
There are three types of conditional sentences. They can be summarized as below:

A result clause can be:
- Simple present: to express a habitual activity or situation.

- Simple future: to express a particular activity or situation in the future.

- If I had enough time, I would study now or tonight.

- I would visit him now if I were you.

- Were I you, I would visit him.
In truth:
I don’t have enough time.

I don’t visit him now because I am not you.

- If I had had enough time, I would have studied last night.



- Had I had enough time, I would have studied last night.
In truth:
I didn’t have enough time. Therefore, I didn’t study last night.
