Conjunction

As I have posted in the previous posting about part of speech that it is used to join words and words, phrases and phrases and clauses and clauses. In this writing I would like to explain more about it. However, before I tell you more about this, I want you to check your understanding yourselves about it by giving you a paragraph. Here is the paragraph that you can identify the conjunctions.

Noun

Now we will discuss about noun. There are many nouns that we can find surrounding us easily such as table, chair, teacher, happiness and many others. However it is not just like this. There are many kinds of the noun. It can be concrete and it can also be abstract. Here we will discuss all about the noun.

Adjective

Look at the paragraph below!
My friend, Likin, is a handsome tall boy. He always wears a long white T-shirt and a big red cap. He carries a huge blue canvas bag to school. His favorite food is crunchy red apples and he always has one in his bag. Our teacher is an English kind tall man called Mr. Bakri. He wears a smart blue suit and glasses with thick black plastic frames.

Can you identify the adjectives in the example paragraph above? How do you know if they are adjectives? How they are combined with the noun? Well, I will try to explain all these questions. Here they are:

Pronoun

The function of pronoun is to replace the noun. In the sentence it can replace the noun in the subject and in the object. Have a look the examples below!

1.      John and William are English students. They memorize five vocabularies every day.
2.      Henry visits his new girl friend twice a week. He always gives her flowers every time he visits her.
3.      Whose book is this?
This is my book.
4.      Whose book is this?
This is mine.
5.      I myself do this assignment.

The first sentence we can see that the word ‘they’ replaces the subject ‘John and William’. We do not need to write ‘John and William’ anymore instead of ‘they’. ‘They’ here is called as a subject pronoun because it replaces the noun ‘John and William’ in the subject of the sentence. The word ‘they’ here comes before the verb ‘are’ (or it can be called as linking verb). So, we can understand that the subject pronoun is located before the subject not after the verb.

Part of Speech

We should not learn English grammar from the highest level. It will make us difficult or even we will be easy to give up learning it if we directly learn it from the highest level. What we need is just learning it step by step and we also need to be patient to learn it. This is the first step that we have to understand for the first time. That is about part of speech. We need to be able to recognize what word it is so that we can arrange the word into sentence correctly. To be able to recognize the English words we need to study ‘part of speech’.

How important to learn English grammar

Have a look what the English learners think about grammar. Here they are:
·   I learn English to be able to speak not to understand English grammar because I never use grammar when I am speaking English to others.
·   I have already memorized a lot of vocabularies but I cannot use them to speak and to write correctly. I think my effort to memorize English words is useless.
·   When I speak, I never think about grammar. I think learning English grammar just makes English difficult.

Once failure doesn't mean to be failed forever

(My story in learning English)
I will never forget this unhappy day. It happened when I was in senior high school grade three in 2006. It was the day when every grade three student had to gather in one class to receive a good white envelope. The envelope was not money that I could use to continue studying at university but it was the envelope of national assessment system result. The first I was really happy that it was the time to know my result. I did believe that I would pass the exam but what I hoped did not come true. I was failed in English subject.
